If you want to earn while you learn a skilled profession, the Department's apprenticeship programs are your choice. Successful candidates can work as an apprentice Hydroelectric Plant Operator, Mechanic, or Electrician, or as a Utility Craftsworker Apprentice. Training programs range from three to four years, and include classroom instruction, home study, and work experience. As an apprentice, you will work under the close supervision of a certified journey person and perform increasingly complex technical tasks.

JOB LOCATIONS

For the HEP Series, you may be located in one of the Department's five field divisions in Oroville, Byron (near Stockton), Santa Nella (near Los Banos), Bakersfield, and Castaic (near Los Angeles). As a Utility Craftsworker Apprentice, you may be assigned to either one of the field divisions, the Sacramento Maintenance Yard in West Sacramento, or the Sutter Maintenance Yard (near Yuba City).

FILING INSTRUCTIONS
Apprentice jobs are filled by appointments from entry level, pre-apprentice classifications of Mechanical and Technical Occupational Trainee (MTOT) or Maintenance and Service Occupational Trainee (MSOT).

Interviews are usually held only once in October or November. Admission to the program is open to all. For more information about openings, contact the field office nearest you.

UTILITY CRAFTSWORKER APPRENTICE
Concentration is on operation and maintenance of large mobile construction and equipment, corrosion control, mechanic shop practices, flood control practices and procedures, rigging, and protective coating. After completing the program, you will advance to journey-level status.
